Our history
The advantageous location near today’s Saulkalne has long been an important area for the production of construction materials. Saulkalne’s earlier history takes us on a journey back to the time when limestone kilns operated there in full swing until the First World War. Immediately after the Second World War, as early as 1944–1945, work resumed in the Saulkalne dolomite quarries and the destroyed pre-war limestone kilns, with the ‘Saulkalnes kaļķu fabrika’ (‘Saulkalne Lime Factory’) opening in 1952. It was renamed ‘Sarkanais Oktobris’ (‘Red October’) in 1960, and in the 1980’s, it became a branch of the Saurieši Combine, making construction lime, ground dolomite, and lime for soil improvement. This factory is the base for what post-independence became SIA Saulkalne S first production facility and the beginning of our story.
